One Million Moms for Gun Control

Gun Regulation needs to be revamped and toughened and made sane now. Even states like New York with some gun control and seeming gun regulation have huge gaps that allow for people to purchase guns without a permit, registration, or a license to carry.

One Million Moms for Gun Control, a new group, organized after the Sandy Hook Elementary School murders, is building momentum to pressure the 113th Congress to act NOW on The Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act being introduced by Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.).

Using Facebook (New Jersey Chapter is found here), Twitter, and on-line sites like BlastRoots that make it easy to spread the word to friends and politicians, One Million Moms for Gun Control is on its way to making sure the cause doesn’t sit back and wait for “next time” – because in the USA, every day is someone’s next time.

Today, January 3rd, 2013, is the first day of concrete action for the group. Not coincidentally, it’s also the first day of the new session for the 113th Congress. Yesterday, One Million Moms for Gun Control issued a press release detailing its intentions:

“We are asking all members of Congress – including the 90 new members being sworn in – to act by bringing gun control legislation to the floor for a vote without delay,” said Shannon Watts , Founder of One Million Moms for Gun Control. “After the tragic massacre in Newtown last month – the 16th mass shooting in 2012 – we need immediate action on common-sense gun control legislation.”

Specifically, One Million Moms for Gun Control is asking the new Congress to act on The Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act being introduced by Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.). The legislation would ban the high-capacity magazines that have been involved in many of the recent high-profile instances of mass gun violence.

The current push is about awareness and recruitment to the cause. Many people have wondered how they can get involved or feel less helpless regarding such a huge issue. And this organization is providing some clear and simple opportunities.

According to Jaime Bedrin, one of the organizers for One Million Moms for Gun Control in New Jersey, “The upshot is that we want to make it clear to the incoming Congress that concerned moms want to see meaningful action on gun control. We want to make ourselves really visible …to galvanize as many people as we can to use sidewalk chalk and posters/signs to spread the message “Moms Demand Action.” To keep the message consistent, One Million Moms for Gun Control asks that participants use the acronym: #1MM4GC, signed with a heart.

Want to take part?  If you make a sign, or use sidewalk chalk, please snap a picture of yourself and/or your artwork and send it to photos@onemillionmomsforguncontrol.org, or tweet it with the hashtags #momsdemandaction, #momsforguncontrol and #1MM4GC.

At Sandler & Wald, we’re confident that Dads, siblings, people in general are all welcome to participate. So, join in to raise awareness and keep the tide of participation turning. We’ve learned from past tragedies that the upswell of fury and action tends to diminish over time – let’s use this opportunity to work together and demand concrete and effective legislation about gun regulation, ammunition control, and appropriate background checks and regulation for guns from the 113th Congress.

We can’t afford to wait for sanity. We have to create it.
